Body Flow #6

Having exhausted all of the techniques that I know of for creating a full-body flow illusion in previous articles, today’s article will touch on next-level areas.

This article might be premature, given the lack of practitioners of full-body liquid, but it would be silly to write this only after a dozen people become proficient at full-body liquid, something that might never happen. If anything, this article aims to inspire by showing possibilities for full-body liquid, hopefully motivating someone to push through past understanding the basic technique and exploring the more exciting areas of this dance.

The most impressive potential for full-body liquid could be in power moves. Some people might cringe at the thought of power in liquid, conjuring up imagery of endless headspins, but watch this video:

It looks dynamic and powerful, yet he avoids repetition and seems to have the freedom of expression that one can only have with a technical foundation. An interesting note from the video:

You see how Banzay’s acrobatics are circular in nature and not linear like gymanstics. This allows them to be performed in a tight space (the roda de capoeira) without crazy run-ups and departure from the game in hand.

And so the acrobatics are circular in nature just like hand flow and rolls, the techniques we use to create liquid. It’s not hard to see the shapes that the circular acrobatics create and its potential application in liquid.

The other area that I would like to see liquid flow seep into is dancing with multiple people. If you can use shapes, contours, and threads to create your own body flow, certainly you can create bigger, more complex illusions with two bodies:

Watching this couple dance, I can’t help but think that with the right kind of spacing between their hands, and the occasional thread or contour, it would look like two-person liquid.

And so this concludes the series on body flow. I might make some demonstration clips, but to be honest, I am not all that comfortable with being on video publicly, so if I do make any videos, they will likely be private and viewable by request only (youtube account here).
